Araw ng kagitingan/Bataan Death March

The Philippine national holiday Araw ng Kagitingan, commonly known as Bataan Day or Bataan and Corregidor Day, commemorates the fall of Bataan during World War II. It is celebrated on April 9, though it was changed to April 6 in 2009 to avoid clashing with Maundy Thursday.

The surrender of the Philippines to Japan resulted in some of the worst crimes in contemporary wartime history. As a result of the Japanese troops' failure to provide food and drink to their hostages, several soldiers became weak and began to fall behind the rest of the company. Those who fell behind were beaten to death. Those who were unlucky were run over by army trucks and other vehicles.

The seized soldiers were to be transported to Camp O'Donnell, which the Japanese had converted into a jail. Soldiers were loaded into boxcars in San Fernando during the march. Men who didn't fit in were compelled to walk. The imprisoned soldiers were sent to Cabanatuan prison camp to join the prisoners of war from the Battle of Corregidor after Camp O'Donnell was decommissioned.
